McLean Theatre Company Wins Nine Awards

The McLean High School Theatre Company (MTC) earned nine awards and recognitions at the Virginia Theatre Association’s (VTA) 2013 Conference awards ceremony Oct. 27, in Reston. MTC’s production of Jason Robert Brown’s "The Last Five Years," performed as a special 45-minute format, garnered five awards led by a special Judges Award for Best Musical Presentation and overall Honorable Mention for the production.

Spring Hill Elementary School recently held its 10th Annual Family Science Night, called “Scientists in Our Midst.” Professional scientists from the school’s own families and neighborhoods included a racecar engineer, a renewable energy inventor, a wildlife expert, a real live rocket scientist and more. ‘Johnny Appleseed’ Comes to The Alden on Oct. 20

Theatre IV’s production of “Johnny Appleseed” will be presented as part of the McLean Kids Performance Series at The Alden in McLean at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Tickets are $15, $10 for McLean tax district residents. The theatre is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue, inside the McLean Community Center.

Area treasure hunters visit McLean Community Center’s semi-annual flea market.

Longtime friends Nancy McCormick, Jeanne Nelsen and Liz Rothrock, who jokingly call themselves “poker widows,” have always looked for ways to have fun while their husbands played poker. Recently, the friends of 26 years have discovered that they love to sell their wares at the MCC semi-annual flea market. “This is our fourth time here,” said Nelsen. “We’ve gotten the same booth several times. We have an absolute blast.” Not only do they have fun, they typically make up to $300 in a four-hour day.

According to veteran director Jessie Roberts, "the playwright, Donald Margulies, explores love and friendship against a backdrop of the moral dilemma of journalists and photo-journalists who record wars, famines and genocide without intervening to affect the outcome of what they are reporting.

The Woman’s Club of McLean held its annual “Christmas in August” Kickoff Tea on Thursday, Aug. 22, to preview its 47th annual Holiday Homes Tour in early December. This year’s tour will have the theme of “four centuries in McLean,” with each of the four tour homes representing a different century.
