For his 16th birthday, McLean native and rising junior at TJHSST Joe Broom specifically asked his parents not to get him a car. This was because he had something better in mind: a new euphonium.

Longtime friends, volunteers celebrate 40 years of colonial-style farming.

Claude Moore Colonial Farm opened its doors on July 26, 1973, with the idea to show what life was like 200 years ago. Forty years later, it still provides a glimpse of daily life for farmers in 1771. The farm welcomed friends and longtime volunteers to celebrate the last 40 years and look to the next 40 years Thursday, July 11.

Lewinsville Road Trail Completed

Connector between Scotts Run Road and Windy Hill Road.

Residents of McLean are now enjoying a new asphalt trail, along Lewinsville Road between Scotts Run and Windy Hill Roads in McLean. Supervisor John Foust (D-Dranesville), community leaders and Fairfax County Departments of Transportation and Capital Facilities staff dedicated the new trail at an event held on June 24 at the corner of Scotts Run and Lewinsville Roads.

New Bicycle Signs Dedicated in Downtown McLean

Signs placed to aid cyclists and walkers through downtown McLean.

Fairfax County staff joined with bicycling advocates in downtown McLean Thursday, June 20, to celebrate the installation of several bicycle wayfinding signs. The signs give directions to bicyclists and pedestrians throughout downtown McLean to community landmarks such as the McLean Community Center, and W&OD Trail.

The Langley High School Orchestra presented its final concert of the school year on June 4 in the Langley HS Auditorium. Directed by Dr. Scott McCormick and Ms. Bo-Min Son, "Blazing Bows of the West" featured music from iconic Western movies and music with an American theme.

Light-hearted fare has arrived at Tysons 1st Stage in the guise of Noel Coward's 1941 hit, "Blithe Spirit." It is a lovely dessert-like confection of escapist froth and meringue. But its age—it was written during the "keep calm and carry on" times of the London Blitz of World War II—is beginning to show even under the assured direction of Lee Mikeska Gardner.

What the numbers say about McLean Day?

The weather forecast called for rain in McLean. Sure enough, about an hour after the 98th annual McLean Day started, it was pouring. That didn’t surprise Volunteer Coordinator Peggy Moore, who says organizers have often joked the event should be called “McRain Day.” But this is an event that goes on rain or shine, “unless the weather is dangerous,” Moore says, holding a funnel cake.

After a few months of uncertainty, the annual Fourth of July fireworks will return to Langley High School for the 30th year this summer. Uncertainties due to the renovations to the field led to questions about whether the McLean Community Center could host the event in the same location, but arrangements were made. Temperatures in the low 60s and rain throughout the day might have kept some people from the annual McLean Day Festival Saturday, May 18, but for the hundreds who look forward to the event, they didn’t even bat an eye.
