McLean High Sings Musicals

Concert features variety of Tony Award-winning songs.

McLean High School combined the best of stage and song last weekend, as they presented a concert of Tony Award-winning songs over two nights. Numbers from more than a dozen musicals were featured, everything from intimate duets to rousing group numbers.

Langley Receives Eight Cappies Nominations

School to perform scene from ‘The Crucible’ at June 10 gala.

Langley High School received eight nominations for this year’s Cappies, including five for their performance of "The Crucible" earlier this year. They will perform a three-minute excerpt of the play at this year’s gala, to be held June 10 at the Kennedy Center.

On Friday May 4, The Madeira School’s African Affairs Club held its second "Art Affair," a "community-wide charity event" which raises funds for the non-profit organization, Freedom in Creation (FIC).

Google VP to Speak at The Langley School

On Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m., The Langley School will host its Distinguished Speaker Series featuring Vinton G. Cerf, Google vice president and chief Internet evangelist. This free event is open to the public and will be held in Langley’s Jeffrey J. Sherman Arts Center at 1411 Balls Hill Road in McLean.

Spring Hill Shares their Veggies with SHARE

As part of their nutrition study and community service requirements, Spring Hill second and third graders are growing healthy vegetables in the Raised Bed Outdoor Classroom and are donating them to the local food bank, SHARE.

Franklin Sherman Honors Volunteers

Jo Hicks, Susana Radice honored for decades of service.

As mothers, Jo Hicks and Susana Radice raised their children in McLean. Once their children were grown, both women decided to take their skills to the local school, Franklin Sherman Elementary School. More than 20 years and 10 teachers later, the two are still going strong volunteering with special needs preschool students.

Marshall High Students Win DECA Competition

A three-student team from Marshall High School won first place at the DECA International Career Development Conference held last week in Salt Lake City. Annie Greenwood, Art Kapplow, and Ali Skahan took top honors for their Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan. Marshall High School is a Fairfax County public school.

McLean Student Named Presidential Scholar

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the selection of Priya Krishnan of McLean, who attends Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Alexandria, as a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Longfellow’s Science Olympians Win State Championship

Longfellow Middle School is celebrating its Science Olympiad team’s recent victory in the Virginia state championship. This year’s state tournament featured 29 schools, including local rival Kilmer MS, which had narrowly defeated Longfellow last year. This time, Longfellow pulled well clear of the competition with an outstanding performance: team members won the gold medal in 12 of the tournament’s 23 events, and placed second or third in 8 other events.

McLean Gymnast Wins State Championship

Margo Gurian, 9, a third grader at Spring Hill Elementary School in Mclean, won the All Around title at the Level 5 Virginia State Gymnastics Championships held at Radford University on April 28.

Enriching Churchill Road’s Garden

Churchill Road second graders began working with local mosaic artist Bonnie Fitzgerald in February to create tiles for an outdoor mosaic depicting the lifecycle of the Monarch butterfly.
